A few frequently seen issues: • Broken or loose brackets and bands – call to schedule a repair; bring any broken piece if it came off completely. • Wire out of place – call for a quick visit to slide it back. • Lost tie wires, elastic ties, or separators – sometimes these can wait until your next appointment; call us to confirm.

What problems can I resolve at home?

You can manage several minor issues at home: • Sores or ulcers – cover abrasive areas of your braces with wax; rinse with salt water to help healing. • General discomfort after braces or adjustments – eat soft foods and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as needed. • Wire poking – gently bend the wire back with a pencil eraser or apply wax over the area. When in doubt, give us a call.

How often will I have orthodontic appointments?

It varies by case, but most patients visit every 6 to 12 weeks.

How do I best protect my braces and other appliances?

Preventing damage is easier than repair: follow food restrictions, avoid sticky and hard foods, and if you play sports, wear an athletic mouthguard. If you're having trouble finding one, let us know—we're happy to help.

What foods are best to avoid when wearing braces?

Avoid sticky foods (caramel, gum, taffy, gummy candy), crunchy items (apples, carrots, popcorn, chips, ice), and overly hard foods (pizza crust, jerky, nuts). These items can damage or dislodge brackets and wires.

Should I still get two dental checkups a year when I have braces?

Getting braces put on doesn’t hurt. However, initial placement and adjustments can cause soreness for a day or two due to the gentle pressure. The discomfort fades quickly.
