EMERGENCIES

Appointments to repair loose bands or brackets, broken archwires or color ties, and lost or broken appliances or retainers are always scheduled during weekday morning hours because they require extra chair time and doctor time (60-90 minutes). We are happy to provide a school or work excuse for these types of appointments. Many repair appointments can be avoided by avoiding sticky, chewy, hard, or crunchy foods that easily damage wires and brackets. For removable appliances such as retainers and expanders, always store them in the storage case that we provide and never wrap them in a napkin, put them in your pocket, or leave them out where they can be easily damaged or lost. Accounts that are more than 10 days past due are subject to a service charge.

MOUTH GUARDS

It is important to protect your teeth and orthodontic appliances with a mouth guard when participating in sports or physical activities.

LOOSE BRACKETS OR APPLIANCES

If anything feels loose or broken, please call our office as soon as possible so we can determine if you need to be seen for a repair.

KEEPING APPOINTMENTS

It's important to keep your appointments as they are scheduled. Excessive rescheduling, cancelling, or not showing up for appointments will add time to your overall treatment time.
Because appointments are scheduled 4-8 weeks in advance for all patients, missing an appointment may result in a significant delay before we can work you back into the schedule. We want you to complete treatment in the most timely manner as possible and keeping your appointments as they are scheduled ensures you will stay on track.

Star Tips & Guidelines

COMFORT TIPS FOR YOUR BRACES

It is not uncommon to experience some soreness or discomfort while undergoing orthodontic treatment, especially when you first get braces on or after they’ve been adjusted. The discomfort associated with braces & orthodontic appliances typically passes quickly. Any time you experience soreness or discomfort, there are a few things you can do at home to relieve the pain:

  • Over the counter pain reliever (Advil or Tylenol) will help relieve any soreness or discomfort. Be sure to take the dosage that is appropriate for your age, weight, etc.
  • Rinsing with warm salt water several times a day will also minimize discomfort and relieve sore gum tissue.
  • Use wax to cover brackets that are rubbing or wires that are poking on the gums or causing ulcers. Rinsing with warm salt water will also help heal sore spots that may occur on the inside of your cheeks or lip.

If you experience pain or discomfort that is excessive or lasts more than 3-4 days, please contact our office so we can help get you comfortable.

STAR TREATMENT, STAR RESULTS!

YOUR PARTICIPATION

Being compliant with your oral hygiene, appliances (turning expanders, wearing face masks, etc.), and wearing elastics as instructed will also help ensure your treatment will be completed on time. Failure to do so will result in extended treatment time and could result in additional appointments.

  • Brush several times a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Rinse several times a day with an alcohol-free, fluoride mouthwash
  • Floss at least once a day to clean hard-to-reach places and to keep gums healthy
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky foods and snacks that will damage braces and appliances
  • Avoid sugary, acidic sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks and fruit juices that erode enamel and cause permanent decalcification (white spots).

ASK QUESTIONS

Communication is a very important part of your relationship with our office and your orthodontic treatment. Dr. Robertson and her experienced team are here to educate you about orthodontics and dental health and answer any questions you have regarding your orthodontic treatment. So please, just ask! We’re here for you.

Star Appointments & Policies

Our patients and their families are very important to us! We strive to provide our patients with “Star Treatment” at every appointment and to provide personalized attention to create an enjoyable experience that will transform their appearance, confidence, and ultimately their lives.

YOUR COOPERATION IS KEY

Successful orthodontic treatment is dependent on patient and parent cooperation. It is imperative that you attend all of your appointments, maintain good oral hygiene, avoid loose and broken appliances, and follow the orthodontist's instructions carefully. Lack of cooperation and participation on your part may result in lengthened orthodontic treatment time and less-than-ideal results. With your cooperation, we'll give you a beautiful smile that will last a lifetime.

RESCHEDULING & CANCELLATIONS

We see all patients in a 4-8 week rotation, and our schedule is typically booked several weeks in advance. For this reason, we encourage you to keep your scheduled appointments to avoid delays in your treatment time. We do understand that occasionally an unforeseen conflict may occur with one of your scheduled appointments. We require 48 hours' notice for cancelled or rescheduled appointments. Appointments broken or not rescheduled with 48 hours' notice are subject to a fee. Please see your "Appointment Policy" contract for more details.

PAYMENTS

For many patients, we set up monthly payments as a convenient way to meet their financial obligations. A 48 Hour Notice is required for ALL rescheduled or cancelled appointments and orthodontic treatment. We wish to stress that the frequency of treatment visits has no bearing on the monthly payment and thus, the monthly payment is due regardless of whether there was a treatment visit that month. Accounts that are delinquent more than 10 days are subject to a service charge. Please see your "Financial Agreement" for more details.

REPAIRS

APPOINTMENTS

In order to provide quality orthodontic care, it is imperative that our patients understand the manner in which we schedule our appointments. We value your time and make every effort to stay on or ahead of schedule. For your convenience, we offer appointments at a variety of times in an effort to accommodate your schedule. While we make every effort to accommodate your busy schedule, please understand that some missed school/work will be unavoidable over the course of treatment. We are happy to provide school/work excuses for such appointments.

  • Our schedule is designed to maximize the hours after school/work hours on weekdays and on Saturday. Appointment times during these "peak" hours are reserved for shorter appointments that don't require a lot of time in the chair or with a doctor. Scheduling this way allows us to see the maximum number of patients during these more popular hours.
  • There are certain procedures that are more complex and require longer appointment times (60-90 minutes). These appointments are always scheduled during weekday morning hours to allow for adequate time for the procedure.

Star Oral Hygiene

OrthoCare Program

Personal commitment to oral hygiene is critical to YOUR orthodontic success!

RE- MINDER!

Please see your General Dentist EVERY 4 to 6 months for a check-up and cleaning while receiving orthodontic treatment.

Routine cleanings are NOT part of your Orthodontic Care at Star Orthodontics.

Our goal for every patient is to create a beautiful, healthy smile that will last a lifetime. Patient compliance plays a huge role in achieving great orthodontic results and we want to make sure our patients are educated about the tools needed to maintain excellent oral hygiene while undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Braces and orthodontic appliances present a challenge to maintaining excellent oral hygiene because they provide an additional surface for food, plaque and bacteria to get trapped. Using proper tools several times a day is very important.

BRUSHING

You’ll need to brush several times a day when you have braces or an orthodontic appliance. We recommend first thing in the morning, at night before bed and after every meal or snack. Brush for 4 minutes each time, being sure to cover every surface of each tooth. A Sonicare Power Toothbrush will help you achieve optimal results with your brushing. Rinsing with an alcohol-free mouthwash with fluoride is also recommended.

FLOSSING

Floss your teeth at least once a day to clean the surfaces between teeth and along the gum line. Harmful bacteria lurk in these areas that a toothbrush can’t reach, causing inflamed gums that are red, puffy, and sore. Floss threaders help you easily navigate around braces and orthodontic appliances.

FOOD & BEVERAGE CHOICES

While undergoing orthodontic treatment, please avoid all food and snacks that are sticky, chewy, gooey, hard, and crunchy. Foods and snacks that fall into any of these categories can damage your braces and orthodontic appliances. This will result in additional appointments for repairs and may prolong your treatment time.

We also advise you to avoid beverages that are sugary and acidic (carbonated drinks, sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks, fruit juice, sweet tea) because even in small quantities, these beverages can permanently erode enamel and cause decalcification (white spots) and decay.
