What to Do and When to Call
A bracket pops off during dinner. A wire starts poking your cheek on a Sunday night. Your child takes a ball to the mouth at practice. Orthodontic problems rarely wait for office hours, and when they happen, it helps to know exactly what to do next. Below, we walk through the most common braces and Invisalign clear aligner emergencies we see at Star Orthodontics, what you can safely do at home, and when to call our team in Corpus Christi right away.

These quick fixes are temporary. They’re meant to keep you comfortable until our team can take a look, not to replace a visit.
As your teeth move, a wire that once fit perfectly can shift and start to poke your cheek or gums. Cover the sharp spot with a small piece of orthodontic wax and call our office to schedule an appointment. If the wire is sticking out at the back of your mouth, you can try gently pushing it flat against the tooth with the soft eraser end of a clean pencil or a cotton swab. Please don't cut the wire yourself unless our team walks you through it; a snipped piece can be swallowed or cause injury.
Brackets usually come loose when something hard, crunchy, or sticky meets your braces. If the bracket or band is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax if it's uncomfortable. If it comes out completely, place it in an envelope or small bag and bring it to your visit. One important safety note: never connect headgear or elastics to a loose band. Call us, and we'll get it back where it belongs.
Those tiny colored rubber ties can pop off, especially when you're eating. It's rarely urgent, but give us a call, and we'll let you know whether you need an appointment or whether it can wait until your next visit.
It's common to get small sores inside your mouth, especially in the first weeks of treatment. Place a small amount of wax over the part of the brace that's rubbing, and rinse gently with warm salt water. Sores typically improve within a couple of days and heal completely within about a week. If a sore keeps getting worse or doesn't improve, let us know.
Your retainer protects the results you worked hard for, and teeth can begin to shift sooner than most people expect when it's missing. If your retainer is cracked, bent, or lost, don't try to bend it back or wear a damaged one that cuts your mouth. Call us, and we'll repair or replace it. With our on-site lab, we can often move quickly.
If an Invisalign aligner is lost or cracked, keep wearing your previous tray in the meantime if it fits comfortably, and call our office. We'll tell you whether to move on to your next set or have a replacement made so you stay on track.
Some tenderness for a few days after your braces go on, or after an adjustment, is normal and not an emergency. Soft foods and a little wax can help. Call us if the pain is severe or doesn't ease.

If you or your child takes a hit to the face or mouth, the teeth and jaw come first, and the braces second. The American Dental Association and the American College of Emergency Physicians note that injured teeth can sometimes be saved, but speed matters.
Go to the ER for heavy bleeding that won’t stop, a suspected broken jaw, or trouble breathing or swallowing. Once the injury is treated, call us. We’ll check your braces, wires, and tooth movement and adjust anything that was damaged so your treatment can get back on course.
What if I swallow a bracket or piece of wire? It’s usually not serious, but call us. Seek medical care right away if there’s coughing, trouble breathing, or severe stomach pain.

When something goes wrong with your braces, you want a team that picks up and knows what to do. Here’s what you can expect from us:
We aim to make repairs simple and stress-free. When you arrive, we’ll take a look at the problem area, check how it may have affected your tooth movement, and repair, replace, or adjust whatever needs attention, whether that’s re-bonding a bracket, replacing a wire, trimming a poking end, or remaking a retainer. If an injury is involved, we’ll also check your bite and the health of the surrounding teeth. Before you leave, we’ll show you how to avoid the same issue in the future, and we’ll let you know if your next appointment needs to be adjusted.

Braces problems don’t discriminate. Our team treats kids, teens, and adults at every stage of treatment, whether that’s traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, Invisalign, or retainers. If you’re a parent, we know a mid-week emergency adds one more thing to your plate. Flexible scheduling, including Saturdays, is one way we try to take the stress off your family.
Braces problems are stressful, but they’re almost always fixable, and you don’t have to figure it out alone. Star Orthodontics has helped families across Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend for more than two decades. Contact us at 361-992-2483, and let’s get you back to smiling.
True emergencies involve injury to the mouth, face, or teeth, uncontrolled bleeding, swelling, or severe pain. Issues like a poking wire, loose bracket, or broken retainer are urgent for your treatment and comfort, so call us as soon as you can, but they’re usually manageable at home for a short time with wax and soft foods.
Yes. Star Orthodontics offers 24/7 emergency care, including after hours and holidays. Call 361-992-2483. We’re also open every Saturday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Keep the bracket, cover any rough spots with wax, eat soft foods, and call our office. If it’s still attached to the wire, leave it in place. Never reconnect headgear or elastics to a loose band.
Cover it with orthodontic wax. If it’s at the back of your mouth, you can try gently pushing it flat with a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab. Then call us to schedule a visit. Please don’t cut it yourself.
Sometimes, but we don’t recommend it. Loose brackets can delay tooth movement and lengthen treatment, so it’s best to call us and let us decide how soon you should be seen.
The best chance of saving a permanent tooth is to get care within about 30 minutes, keeping the tooth moist in the socket or in milk. Don’t put back a baby tooth.
We recommend calling as soon as possible. Teeth can start to shift when the retainer isn’t worn as prescribed, and the sooner we repair or replace it, the better your results are protected.
