How Your Teeth Take Damage from a Misaligned Bite

Posted on 4/25/2022 by Star Orthodontics
How Your Teeth Take Damage from a Misaligned BiteCrooked or misaligned teeth are common. Some teeth are bigger, some are smaller, and some are tilted. Misaligned teeth have a variety of causes. Genetics can play a role. Poor oral hygiene could be a cause of misaligned teeth as well. If you lost your baby teeth early, your teeth could have shifted and become crowded. Thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and injuries are all possible causes of misaligned teeth.

The Effects of Misaligned Teeth

If your teeth are misaligned, they can cause other problems. Chewing may become one of those problems. If you cannot chew well, you cannot reduce your food to a size that your stomach can digest well. Not chewing properly may cause digestive issues.

If your teeth are misaligned, you may have excessive wear on some teeth. If that is the case, your teeth are in danger of being cracked. Further, your gums and jaw muscles can be affected as well. You may develop a strain in your jaw. You may incur headaches as your mouth is moving in ways that puts stress on other muscles, which can cause headaches.

Misaligned teeth are more difficult to keep clean. Flossing becomes a chore. Often with crooked teeth there are tight spaces in between teeth and are difficult to access. When teeth are close together it is difficult brush and floss them. Consequently, tooth decay is more common in misaligned teeth.
