Braces are a life changing decision, they have the potential to truly transform your smile and give you tremendous confidence; they can also make it easier for you to bite and to exhibit good oral hygiene. You may be wondering if you are too old to get braces, after all, it does seem like it could put a lot of stress on your teeth.
Brace for the Good News
It is a good thing to know that you are not too old to get braces! According to the American Association of Orthodontists, one in three patients with braces is over 18 years old; even seniors can benefit from braces. While it is often easier to align the mouth of a child, your teeth can still be changed for the better with braces. You may have even had braces in the past, having experiencing damage to your teeth or unalignment due to not wearing your retainer as directed, and wondering if you can get back into a new pair.
Rest assured, you too can get braces and straighten your teeth once again. Preexisting issues, such as tooth decay and tooth or bone loss, need to be carefully managed and treated during your time with braces; as an adult, you are more susceptible to plague build-up than children, which usually means an extra cleaning or two per year to keep your mouth healthy.
It is not the best news, but it may be necessary for you to have some teeth extracted before you can get braces. There are several reasons for this, such as a lack of space and mobility, that prevents your older and more stubborn teeth from aligning properly; getting some teeth pulled will ease the process, and is painless with the use anesthetics; it is a small sacrifice for a beautiful and straight smile.
Additionally, you may also need to see a couple of specialists to make sure that your tooth and bone health do not require any other actions before you can have braces placed. Please call our office to schedule and appointment; we are looking forward to helping you along this journey, because it is never too late to enjoy a wonderful smile!
