Do Teeth Ever Need Extraction Prior to Starting the Braces Process?Getting braces placed may seem straightforward, but there are some factors that need to be considered before you undergo the process. Having one or more teeth removed is a significant event that may need to take place before you can get your braces put on; keep reading to learn about the circumstances that would lead to this procedure being necessary.

Conditions Needing Extraction

While it may not be the most pleasant experience, getting teeth pulled is often necessary to facilitate the proper alignment of teeth with braces. A particularly common situation requiring some teeth to be pulled is when your mouth does not have enough room to properly shift your teeth into the preferred configuration. The need to do this increases as you get older, because teeth and bones have stopped growing and become significantly harder to shift around.

Another situation that could require teeth to be extracted is that of a severe overbite; your teeth need to be shifted to a specific location to properly align your bite, which may not be possible if there is not enough room to work with. Lastly, broken teeth could be a reason to remove teeth; braces require constant pressure on your teeth to shape them into the correct orientation, and if you have a broken tooth then it might not be able to properly take part in the dance of teeth. In this case, it is necessary to pull it so that it does not get in the way and cause unwanted problems as your other teeth try to align.

There may be other situations leading to the necessity of teeth extraction, but we hope that we have given you a good idea of some of the common reasons why you may have to undergo this process. Please call our office to schedule an appointment or if you have any questions about braces – we look forward to hearing from you.
