How Wisdom Tooth Eruption Can Affect Your Orthodontic Work

Posted on 10/8/2021 by Star Orthodontics
How Wisdom Tooth Eruption Can Affect Your Orthodontic WorkThe whole idea of orthodontics is to balance out the alignment of the teeth and improve their symmetry. However, we need to reassess our treatment plan once the wisdom teeth erupt.

Erupting Wisdom Teeth and Their Impact on Orthodontics

Often, patients are concerned about the eruption of wisdom teeth, as their appearance may affect teeth straightening. However, if the wisdom teeth come in without a problem, it should not affect a person's bite. If the very back molars do not come in as they should, though, they can create overcrowding in the back of the mouth. Nevertheless, it is important to emphasize that wisdom teeth are not the sole cause of tooth movement. The teeth can move, over time, without the help of the wisdom teeth. If patients do not wear their retainers after teeth straightening, it can also cause the teeth to move back into their former spots.

Other Wisdom Teeth Concerns

While the wisdom teeth' eruption may not lead to a major problem with orthodontic work, there are still good reasons to remove the wisdom teeth. For example, wisdom teeth are usually extracted because they cause crowding in the back of the mouth, trigger gum infections, cause bone defects and root resorption, or lead to dental decay.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

If the wisdom teeth become embedded in the jawbone, they can cause gum infections and gingival soreness problems. In addition, they can cause recurring headaches or tooth or jaw pain. Therefore, it is important to remove impacted wisdom teeth, as leaving them in place can serve no useful purpose. Normally, the best solution for emerging wisdom teeth is to have them extracted. While they may not affect the results of teeth straightening, they can undoubtedly lead to other future dental issues.

Removing the wisdom teeth, which can be difficult to clean, is the best way to maintain the gums and teeth' health, whether or not they have received orthodontic treatment. Give us a call today to learn more about orthodontic therapies.
