Do Home Teeth Straightening Kits Work

A woman holding her clear alignerWhen properly used, home teeth straightening kits work. However, orthodontists warn that if improperly used, these DIY kits can aggravate the problem. Thus, caution should be taken.

Why Consider Home Teeth Straightening Kits

For most people, DIY teeth straightening kits eliminate the need for dental supervision, which can help lower costs and save time. To others, at-home teeth straighteners offer more control of the treatment course. You can invest more time for quicker treatment and also adjust the treatment process as you wish. These home treatment options offer more flexibility.

How Home Teeth Straightening Kits Work

Home teeth straightening kits mostly consist of clear Invalisign aligners. These aligners are easy to fit and remove. They also carry less risk than braces, which are almost impossible to fix and remove without technical help from an orthodontist.

The process starts with your orthodontic center sending you a kit that makes 3-D impressions of your teeth. These 3D impressions are mailed back to the orthodontist and used to mold your aligners for a perfect fit. This eliminates the need to visit your orthodontist altogether.

After the aligners have been created in the lab using the 3D impressions of your teeth, they are then mailed back to you. The orthodontist will accompany these with clear instructions on how to fix, remove, and care for the aligners.

What Are the Dangers of Home Teeth Straightening Kits?

First, there is no consultation, which eliminates touch between the patient and the orthodontist. This lack of consultation makes it difficult for your dental expert to identify other dental issues that need intervention. Also, it creates a risk of errors in the design of the aligners. When aligners do not properly fit, then they do not work effectively. This explains why most people opt to attend the initial consultation stage physically.

Secondly, there is the risk of damage to teeth and gums during the installation of the aligners. Root damage, gum recession, and teeth loosening are common with the use of these DIY kits.

Closing Remarks

Home teeth straightening kits work when properly used but can pose some dangers. Consult with your dental expert to see if these kits are appropriate for your teeth.
